Baduy Communities

Hundreds of homes in the area of cultural sites Baduy(inside) tribe perished in flames. Relief firefighters can not touch this area because of it's location deep in the countryside. The absense of road infrastructure to the residential Baduy's community's becaused it's the will of their own. With reason to maintain the tradition and culture of tribal Baduy communities. Which prohibits ti use everything that's modernization.

Baduy comunities is cultural society which is devided into 2 parts, namely  Baduy(inside) community and Baduy(outside) community.  Baduy community is an Sundanese indigenous society that settled in the Lebak district, Banten province. The word "Baduy" is the name given by outside residents to the community groups. But they prefer to call themselves by title of "Kenekes". Sundanese language is the language of dailly use by Baduy community with characteristic was banten dialect.  In addition they can also be using the indonesian language fluently for the purposes of communicating with peoples from outside of their community.


Baduy(inside) community or Kenekes peoples are peoples who still hold the traditions and custom of the ancestors very strong. Such prohibited use vehicles for tansportation, not allowed to use footwear, are not allowed to use electronic equipment(technology), using black or white clothes as dailly clothes who made or sewn by themselves, not allowed to use modern clothing.

While Baduy(outside) community is a communities that comes from the Baduy(inside) community, which has violated the rules, restrictions, custom prevailing in the Baduy(inside) community, or on their own to get out from Baduy(inside) community. And could be also to reasons of marriage with others community members.

Baduy(outside) community are familiar with technologies such electronic equipment, although it's use still prohibited for any person Baduy, they use them clandestinely. Daily clothing have followed modern style likes t-shirts, shirts and jeans. Where as for mens, they use a dark blue traditional clothe, which indicates they are not sacred anymore. They are using the tools of modern household such as mattresses, pillows, plates, glass, plastic, etc... And they lived outside the Baduy(inside) tribal areas.

According to their own cherished beliefs, the Baduy or Kenekes peoples are descendants of Dewa Cikal (Cikal God), which is one of the seven gods who is sent to earth (according to hindhu mythology). And still in their beliefs, Baduy peoples are descendants of the prophet Adam, so Baduy community has the task to be meditate or (mandita) order to preserve the harmony of the earth.

There is a difference opinion between Baduy community public opinion with the opinion of historians about the origin of Baduy community. An example is Adimiharja K (in his article entitled "Masyarakat Baduy di Banten"/Baduy community in Banten),  Y. Garna (in his book, "Masyarakat Baduy di Banten"/ Baduy community in Banten),  Josep Iskandar (in his book "An evaluation of the shifting of Baduy society in west java using system modeling"),  C.E. Permana (in his book "Kesetaraan gender dalam adat inti jagat baduy"/ Gender equality in traditional core of the Baduy universe)., etc...Opinion of these historians base their opinion on how synthesis of historical evidence such as "travel records portuguese sailors", "travel records chinese sailors, and historical evidence of the inscription.

Baduy community trust called the "Sunda Wiwitan" (the begining of sundanese) rooted in animism, which in it's development is influenced by Buddhist , Hindhu's and Islam.  The core teaching of the Baduy community is (adherence) to the tradtion of the principle (without any changes) or changes is as little as possible.  As they saying goes in sundanese language, it's ("Lojor heunteu beunang dipotong, pendek henteu beunang disambung") which means "lenghh should not be cut, and short should not be joined".  Taboo problems is understood in daily life literally.

The most important objects of Baduy(inside) community is the "Arca Domas", whose location was kept secret by them, and became a sacred tribe. Baduy peoples visited the site once a year, and should only be visited the site once a year, and should only be visited in fifth month or the month of May in the year AD for purpose of worship.

According to C.E. Permana , also sundanese people, who in his book entitled "Kesetaraan gender dalam adat inti jagat baduy"/ Gender equality in the tradtional core of the Baduy universe).  Only "Pu'un" (leader community) which is the highest leader and elected members of the community gets to attend worship at Arca Domas  complex. Baduy(inside) community in divided into 3 group community, likes Tangtu  group, Panamping  group and Dongka  group. Known as Baduy(inside) community. They were the most closely follow the culture, tradition and custom. The Baduy(inside) community that settled in the Cibeo village, Cikartawana village and Cikeusik village.
