Delman : traditional transportation

Delman is a traditional transportation which has two, three, or four wheels who do not use the machine but with horse.  Delman is one of the environmentally friendly transportation, which still are used mainly in the rural areas. These traditional transportation is usually called "Delman" or "Sado" (Jakarta, Banten, and West Jawa). Called  "Andong" or "Dokar" at (DIY, central Java, east java, Madura and Bali).

The name of this carriage comes from the inventor namely Charles Theodore Deeleman, he's an litografer and engineer at dutch colonial period. Dutch peoples used to call this carriage  with called dos-a-dos (back to back, french language literally), which is kind of train passenger seating position who oposite each other. Term dos-a-dos are then referred as "Sado" by the natives of batavia (Jakarta antiquity).


In colonial period, delman used as a tool for humans transporting,  while dokar used as goods transport.  In development, the dokar has changed the function, be a transport for humans and no longer for goods transport.

In big city as jakarta, delman can we find at the national monumen (Monas) area. Delman is usually used by jakarta and the surrounding communities for familly recreational facilities. But began november 1, 2009, delman is no longer allowed to operate around the Monas area. In connection with prohibition of the jakarta regional goverment, to not used the national monument areas as traffic or delman parking. The purpose of these rules is to make better the national monument area and surrounding.
